Today my son brought me a bunch of rhubarb from his place of employment. I quickly turned those long stemmed produce into a tasty flavored sauce, ready to be put into containers. To equalize the sour taste I added about a 1/2 cup of fruit cocktail cups which I had on hand and a few tablespoons of sugar. What a difference that makes to the palate. It all in the taste.
God’s word talks about taste and the famous verse comes to mind as found in Psalm 34 : 8. ” Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” The cross reference to this verse as shown in my NIV is 1Peter 2 : 2 and 3,” Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you my it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
How then do we “taste and see” spiritually?
As believers we need to dig into the WORD, to pray, to encourage one another in what we have learnt from God’s WORD and to live out our salvation. In so doing we will “taste and see that the Lord is good, even in our valley experiences.
Death happens in life as we live in a fallen world. Relationships become fractured, doors open or close on us.
It was in 1972 that my family experienced a double tragedy. I was recently married, pregnant with our first child when news came that my mom had passed away. At this time my parents lived in western Canada, so we flew to the funeral and back again. Two months later my mother in law passed away. It was heartbreaking, yet we clung to the WORD and experienced His Presence and faithfulness through all this.
In the following paragraph is a quote I will leave with you that can help us to taste and see that the LORD IS GOOD in our valleys and on our mountain tops of life’s’ challenges and blessings.
We experience this spiritual reality through a few deliberate, everyday practices: [1]
- Putting His Word to the Test: Tasting requires action. You experience God’s goodness by applying His promises to your life. When you choose forgiveness, trust Him with your anxieties, or seek His refuge during hard times, you actively experience His faithfulness. [1, 2, 3]
- Reading and Meditating: Spend daily time in scripture. By filling your mind with God’s truth, you begin to “taste” the sweetness of His wisdom, replacing faulty attitudes with peace. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Active Prayer and Reflection: Slow down and intentionally notice God’s blessings. Cultivate a lifestyle of thanksgiving, and bring your honest needs to Him to see how He provides. [1, 2, 3]
- Participating in Worship: Engage in corporate worship and sacraments (like Communion) to tangibly remember and celebrate Christ’s sacrifice. [1, 2]
- Serving Others: As you grow in love for those around you and serve them, you reflect God’s nature and experience the profound joy of His Spirit working through you. [1]
If you’d like, let me know:
- Is there a specific area or life situation where you are currently seeking to experience God’s goodness?
- Do you have a regular routine for scripture or prayer that we could build on?
I can help tailor these spiritual practices to fit exactly what you are going through right now.
